The Land of 10,000 Lakes and...Birds?

Minnesota Northwoods has so many things to do, but one of our more underrated activities is birdwatching, or birding. In 2017 Bemidji was named a Bird City by an Audubon Minnesota project that recognizes communities for improving bird habitat, reducing threats to birds, and engaging citizens in conservation action.

The area has an abundance of birds and we’ve come up with a checklist to keep all bird watchers on their toes. All you need to begin birding is a little knowledge about the birds you want to see and a pair of binoculars. As soon as you step foot out of your cabin at on one of our member resorts, you will understand how the northwoods area is one of the finest places to experience birding. With over 200 birds to see during the year, it can be hard to take the first step in narrowing down birds you want to find. To help you out, we’ve listed five birds to look for first:

  1. Northern Cardinal
  2. Wood Duck
  3. Baltimore Oriole
  4. Scarlet Tanager
  5. Bald Eagle

We can’t wait for you to experience the wonderful activity of birding, enjoying the beautiful, colorful, chirpy, feathered friends we love to watch. It’s just one of many great things to do in the Bemidji, Blackduck and Cass Lake area. Contact Minnesota Northwoods or sign up for more information, and never miss a sighting again.
